The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me! My name is Maeve and I am an aspiring cafe owner and artist. I love to make things–food and craft–and the purpose of this platform is to fine tune my skills as an artist and cook while sharing with you what I make, how I make it, and what I’ve learned from my mistakes. Included will be finished and in-the-works recipes, tips and tricks, and plenty of craft ideas.

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

I’ve cooked with my mom my whole life and we’ve created some wonderful memories together because of it. On all three of our cross-country road trips we made some of the best meals any of us–mom dad or me–have ever had, and it was all in the small space of an RV. We discovered and rediscovered culinary masterpieces that had missed our hopeful stomachs for a sorry period of time. In fact, it was on a trip to Wisconsin that we found the magical cheese called burrata, a mozzarella with a creamy center. Perfect with tomatoes.

It was in San Francisco that we spent more money than anyone should spend on a small bottle of balsamic vinegar. I’m embarrassed to share the true cost of this extravagance but I will say that we refer to it as “tuition” and pay the piper semiannually for a new bottle.

Just this past trip we immersed chicken skewers in a milk and cumin marinade for several hours, eating them with a to-die-for peanut sauce and a refreshing tomato-cucumber fattoush.

These moments of tastiness are more than pure enjoyment. They mark the convergence of art and science, the results of which are beautiful and tasty and the most wonderful hours of my day. I remember more when I am sharing food with other people, partaking in their own creations and discovering new and amazing recipes from their kitchens. For so many years I’ve read through blog after blog, finding great ideas and improving upon them. I’ve learned so much from other people, from the dozens of cookbooks I keep in my house, from my mom who calls me her sous chef.

Now I’d like to share what I’ve learned (and am learning) with you.

Let’s cook!
